WASHINGTON (CNN) — There will be more than enough doses of the H1N1 vaccine to go around in the United States, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Thursday. She said that at least 6 million doses of the vaccine will be available in the United States during the first week of October.
“The notion that because target groups are supposed to get it first, that there won’t be enough, that we’re leaving people behind, needs to be corrected,” Sebelius said at a White House briefing.
There “will be plenty of vaccine for everyone who wants it,” she said. She said 250 million doses have been purchased, and “that will be plenty.”
Most of the initial doses available in October will be FluMist nasal spray. It is approved only for healthy individuals between the ages of 2 and 49. Pregnant women are not allowed to get this type of vaccine because it contains a live virus.
Ten to 20 million doses of the vaccine will be available each week after the first week in October, Sebelius said.
Sebelius aimed to dispel another myth: that the vaccine will be too expensive.
“The vaccine is paid for by the federal government,” she said. The vaccine itself will be free, although some providers may charge an administrative fee. We’re asking people not to do that, and private health plans say they won’t charge a fee, and a lot of providers are saying they won’t charge. They understand charging a fee would be a barrier, and they say they want to lower the barriers.”
The federal government has asked the states to determine the best way to distribute the vaccine, and the government will get the vaccine to various locations.
“We will drive the vaccine to that site,” Sebelius said, adding that 90,000 sites have been identified.
Both Sebelius and Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged pregnant women to get a vaccine shot.
According to a CNN/Opinion Corp. poll released in late August, 66 percent of Americans plan to be vaccinated against H1N1 flu.
Also Thursday, the World Health Organization said manufacturers would be able to produce 3 billion doses of H1N1 vaccine over the course of a year. The WHO said early data from clinical trials suggest that a single dose of the vaccine will be sufficient for healthy adults and older children.
However, the WHO said on its Web site that “these supplies will still be inadequate to cover a world population of 6.8 billion people in which virtually everyone is susceptible to infection by a new and readily contagious virus.”
Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny, director of the WHO’s Initiative for Vaccine Research, said that nine countries, including the United States, have offered to donate vaccines for use in developing countries and that the WHO will be coordinating the distribution.

She said Thursday that distribution was expected to begin by the end of October.

Halloween costumes cheap and easy
From the number of reads on my recent blog post about hot Halloween costumes, a lot of you are pumped up about dressing up this year. So, here are some more cool -- and cheap -- costume ideas.
The Party City people are promoting costumes starting at $9.99, so I checked out what you can get for that.
There are several kids' costumes you can grab for that price: A Tootsie Roll bunting for newborns to 9-month-olds is just adorable. Your toddler to grade schooler can be a Pint-sized Pirate, Lil' Quarterback, Spider-Man, Barbie Spirit Cheerleader or Runway Diva.
For adults, the selection is a bit smaller at the low-end of the scale. For $14.99, ladies can be Pirate Wenches or French Maids. Guys, you can be a Pirate Man for $14.99 or a Jailbird Convict for $19.99.
Under the $9.99 mark, there are several things you can pair with clothes and accessories you'll already have, such as various types of wings and wigs for $9.99, capes and robes for $6.99 and masks for $4.99.

They also come in white. For some inspiration, here are some super-cheap costumes my family has made for school and parties over the years. When my kids were small, they had pajamas that doubled well as costumes, one a bat with wings sewed to the arms (we just added a mask) and Spider-Man PJs with webs under the arms. Because they were pajamas, the boys got much more use out of them than for just one night.
I've dressed up in flannel, denim and pig-tails to be a farm girl, and cut out bats from construction paper, then pinned them to a poncho and glued a few to a headband to be a bat woman.
My husband took his hunting clothes and put on camo makeup, then took an old arrow (no tip obviously) and a-la Steve Martin, cut it in half and taped it to the front and back of his shirt.
Are you good at making a lot out of a little when it comes to Halloween costumes? Tell us about it in the comments box below. And, for fun, here's how to make fake blood for makeup.

Finding a Good Scare
The days are getting shorter and the nights are creeping in.
As you leave work (sometimes its own House of Horrors) and walk to your car, a brisk breeze snakes through your thin jacket.
The first of the season’s dead leaves swirls in front of you, creating a Mostly Ghostly visage in the half-darkness. You shake off the ensuing chill and turn down Valley Street, suppressing the Haunted Hollow feeling in your gut.
You continue toward your car, passing Eerie Acres of Korn Maze, a seemingly Haunted Schoolhouse, Dark Pumpkin shadows and dancing gray reeds that evoke irrational fears of stalking Killer Clowns.
Over the next ridge in an almost Hidden Valley, your parking garage comes into sight. After this daunting walk through a self-imposed Land of Illusion, the garage resembles a yawning Haunted Cave beneath the looming, blue-black sky.
As you fumble through your pocket for your keys, classic and timeless Legends of Horror ooze through the Terrormaze of your mind.
You grasp the cold pieces of metal that you hope will save you, but they just manage to unlock deeper, more toxic Chambers in your subconscious.
Visions of Horror in 3-D flash and Slash before you, displaying Castles of Carnage that are linked by Blood Trails and ruled by the Angel of Death.
You reach out your hand toward your car, trying to steady yourself and suppress the Nightmare. You turn the key in the lock, swing the heavy door open and dive into the Black Bog that awaits.
Quickly, you pull the door closed and lock all the doors. You exhale; finally safe. But, as you drive toward home and the fears and Panic increasingly evaporate, you find yourself increasingly deflated and more than a bit bored.
Then you get an idea. You pick up your phone and call a friend.
“Hey, want to go to a haunted house tonight?”
Good thing you have plenty to choose from.
